5 years in the making and heavily anticipated, Tom wanted something striking which would excite his fan base. Something unique. Something… Awesome.

So, that’s exactly what we did.

Unlike anything Tom had ever done before, the ambitious project would start a new direction for his career. The album supported his nearly completed feature film. Our project was equally ambitious, we had to translate his ideas for the project into products which people would want to showcase in their collections.

At the first meeting, Tom handed over a few stills from the film and gave an overall idea for what he wanted to complete. After a few days of concepting, it was obvious that the moonman was the singular image that visually encompassed the project as a whole.

The resulting icon is instantly recognizable. The bands existing crescent moon (from the original L)VE release) combined with the Moonman made for a unique mark which unified the various parts of the project. Working equally well for branding purposes as it did for the DIY attitude of the film & Tom’s art, it also presented the band with an opportunity for a variety of merchandising opportunities. Tom requested stencils to spray paint the logo on instruments, fans created their own art & snatched up the available merchandise for years since it’s release.

Everyone was happy, the Moonman was a hit.

Including 3 discs, a booklet & poster the packaging contained two main parts, a 4-panel disc holder with a plastic sleeve cover. The disc holder was printed with a seamless nebula on a prismatic paper so it caught every bit of light possible. The opaque printed sleeve had the Moonman window knocked out of the print so the prismatic nebula could shine through, creating a multidimensional effect that the Tom’s amazing project deserved.

The major part of the overall LOVE project was the feature film, opening at the 2011 Santa Barbara International Film Festival to rave reviews. The traditional, full sheet poster featured a screenshot from the film showing the vast openness of space depicted in the film with the iconic Moonman on the bus bench in the foreground. The layout & choice of imagery was meant to show the solitude & starkness of the film.

Working with Tom & the To The Stars team on concepts to promote the film, we came up with the idea to have a group of people in spacemen outfits sitting on bus benches & wandering the area where the movie was playing (originally at the Santa Barbara Premier, but also at The Seattle International Film Festival, Fantastic Fest & others). Orange spaceman outfits were purchased on Amazon, L)VE patches applied & a group of volunteers eager to help promote the film were suited up & set free. What started as a random idea grew into something which was covered across national media & helped get L)VE additional screenings at the film festival.

This idea was so successful that To The Stars continued this concept when they released POET Anderson, Of Nightmares… where they got a group of volunteers to walk around San Diego during ComicCon.
